MRA Research (MRAR) specialises in construction, building products and home improvement markets. The business has a high profile and strong reputation in the industry for reliable data and strategic insights.

Examples of our work and projects

The Construction Products Association – one of the main industry bodies – selected MRAR to consult the industry on a new building Code as tasked by Dame Judith Hackitt for the Grenfell Inquiry. The consultation enabled the CPA to finalise the Code with confidence, before transferring it to an independent body: www.cpicode.org.uk/news/cpa-publishes-results-of-industry-consultation-on-new-code.

MRAR set up and runs the Builders’ Merchant Building Index (BMBI) www.bmbi.co.uk to provide a reliable indicator of the important repair, maintenance and improvement sector to track home improvements and provide a high profile platform for leading brands (the Experts) who include some of the biggest brands in the industry. They explain the trends and speak for their markets. The Department for Building Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) includes the monthly BMBI report in its Monthly Construction Update. Subsequently, MRAR set up a Plumbing & Heating Merchant Index (PHMI) www.phmi.co.uk which also goes to the BEIS.

The Pulse www.mra-research.co.uk/the-pulse is a monthly sales expectations and confidence trends survey which is published in a leading industry magazine.

MRAR runs regular customer experience surveys and benchmarking against competitor brands to drive performance improvements. These range from daily calling and monthly reporting for groups of businesses, to annual surveys.

We also get asked to do a variety of projects from research to help a leading merchants develop the branch of the future; to map how the specification process is changing in response to Grenfell.

The job

The position reports directly to Ralph Sutcliffe, Head of Research & Business Development Director, with dotted line reporting to the CEO for industry and research knowledge and methodology.

The MRPM will be responsible for resource management and the planning and management of research projects, from commissioning through to presentation of results.

MRAR works closely as a team and the team leaders are hands-on when required to ensure we wow customers with high quality insights and recommendations while hitting deadlines and exceeding customer expectations. When necessary we are all prepared to be hands on to get the jobs done.

Most new team members know little about construction or research and insight, but they can be learned. Attitude and aptitude is far more important.

As we grow and take on the people to grow, and the team expands and learns about the markets and research products, training and learning are critical. New members succeed by learning about customers, their markets and the research tools and products we use to help them.

We encourage learning and training and provide briefings and materials and information, but learning is a two way business and largely set by the appetite and energy of team members.

The role

The MRPM will work closely with the Head of Research and CEO in order to build awareness and understanding of proposed projects so they can contribute to and manage the resource and project planning as effectively as possible. The MRPM liaises with internal and external researchers, fieldwork agencies and customers and is responsible for the quality and timing of the data capture, either directly or indirectly, through the team of researchers and analysts.

Although we are currently recruiting to grow and add new skills and experience, our policy is to grow from within and we want ambitious leaders-in-waiting at every level. This role has the potential to develop into a broader role, in line with the candidate’s ambitions and aims.

Key requirements

  • At least 3 years’ experience in a research project and team management role, ideally agency-side or in a B-2-B market research environment.
  • An interest in and confidence in learning about research, both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies and products.
  • Strong communication and people skills.
  • Strong IT skills.
  • Highly accurate and reliable with details.
  • Comfortable and competent in managing multiple projects simultaneously
  • Deadline driven.
  • Comfortable working on your own or as part of the team you lead. You will be equally comfortable rolling up your sleeves to ensure we deliver on time, in full, with the insights and recommendations we promised. And in showing the team how it’s done.
  • Travel is not as common as it was, and much of it is virtual now, but willingness to travel as required.
  • Ambition – we want members of the team to grow by helping MRAR grow.
